Car Safety Seats: A Guide for School aged children booster seats

-->
Booster seats are for older children who have outgrown their forward-in front of car safety seats. It is best for children to ride in a harnessed seat as long as feasible, at least to 4 years of age. If your child outgrows his seat before reaching 4 years of age, consider using a seat with a harness accepted for higher weights and heights. A child has outgrown his forward-in front of seat when any one of the follow is true:
  • He reaches the top weight or height acceptable for his seat with a harness. (These restrictions are listed on the seat and also included in the instruction booklet.)
  • His shoulders are above the top harness slots.
  • His ears have reached the top of the seat.
Booster seats are designed to raise the child up so that the lap and shoulder seat belts fit correctly. High-back and backless booster seats are presented. They do not come with harness straps but are used with the lap and shoulder seat belts in your vehicle, the same way an adult rides. Booster seats should be used until your child can correctly fit in lap and shoulder seat belts. Booster seats usually include a plastic clip or guide to help ensure the correct use of the vehicle lap and shoulder belts. See the tutoring booklet that came with the booster seat for directions on how to use the guide or clip.

US Airways posts income on fuel hedges, announces inflight WiFi agreement

-->
A $192 million fuel hedging grow pushed US Airways to a second-quarter net income of $58 million, reversed from a $568 million defeat in the year-ago period when goodwill impairment charges weighed on the bottom line.
"It's a complicated economic situation but US Airways is performing very healthy in that environment," Chairman and CEO Doug Parker said. He credited "very forceful" cost control and $100 million in revenue generated from "a la carte" fees during the quarter. He noted that the carrier expects $400 million in ancillary revenue for the year and will continue to pursue new opportunities to make added revenue.

BMW Z8 Is One Of The Most Expensive Cars In The World

The BMW Z8 is a car that has polarized the automotive press. a little love the car for its smooth, easy-to-drive user-friendliness--the thing that makes autos like the modern Jags such a pleasure. Others feel it's too softly sprung and not "immediate" adequate--it doesn't feel as if it's as engaged with the road as a lot of other exotic sports cars are.

We can realize both camps but tend to side with the former crowd, because the Z8 makes you feel like a champion driver without forcing you to break a sweat every time you go for a spin.

In fact, that's the BMW DNA at work in the Z8, for just about every BMW gets increasingly more sporty the harder you drive it, but never beats you up if you just want to cruise at a more stately pace.

China rolls exposed 89 fresh models in six months - that's one each two days

-->
We've been hearing Chinese officials say for fairly some time now that there are far too many automakers in the kingdom for a healthy market in the long-term, but we didn't understand until today just how out-of-hand it may be. According to state-run Chinese information agency Xinhua, China has seen an unprecedented 89 new vehicle launches so far this year.

That's definitely a huge number, but it doesn't truly hit home until you consider that 89 vehicles in the first half of 2009 averages out to a new or a lot revised vehicle appearing in China once every two days. Of those new designs, 73 were cars, nine were SUVs, six were MPVs and – in difference to typical American vehicle launches over the same time – only one was a crossover.

A traffic clash is when a road vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, or geographical or architectural barrier Traffic collisions can result in injury, property damage, and casualty.

Phrases generally used to describe collisions contain: auto accident, car accident, car crash, car smash, car wreck, motor vehicle accident (MVA), motor vehicle collision (MVC), personal injury collision (PIC), road accident, road traffic accident (RTA), road traffic collision (RTC), road traffic incident (RTI), smash-up and fender bender.
As the factors concerned in collisions have become better understood, some organizations have begun to let alone the term "accident," as the word suggests an unavoidable unpredictable event and disregards the chance for the driver(s) involved to avoid the crash.

Transportation Secretary Announces $60 Million in Economic Recovery Funds to Build and Improve Ferry Docks and Facilities

Transportation Secretary Announces $60 Million in Economic Recovery Funds to Build and Improve Ferry Docks and Facilities WASHINGTON - U.S Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced $60 million in grants to 19 states and one U.S. territory to improve ferry service and save and create jobs under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"The Recovery Act was put in place quickly to rescue the economy from the worst recession since the Great Depression and rebuild it for a stronger future," said Secretary LaHood. "Rebuilding the nation's infrastructure is a key part of that prescription for strength. It creates jobs today and builds for better, more sustainable economy moving forward."
"The projects we selected will help put people back to work and at the same time offer more access to areas that lack transportation options," said Secretary LaHood. "It is about providing more travel choices to people from communities that need it the most."
The Secretary added that most of the projects selected are located in economically distressed areas and will address critical transportation needs. The improvements will be made quickly to satisfy ARRA's emphasis on immediate economic recovery through infrastructure investment. Priority is given to projects that can be completed in two years or less.
The largest projects are in Nueces County, Texas and Detroit, Michigan. Both ferry projects represent key solutions to connect communities and respond to growing traffic needs in the regions. ARRA provides the $60 million to the Federal Highway Administration's Ferry Boat Discretionary program, which is intended for the construction and repair of ferry boats and terminal facilities.

Ports in United States

There are more than 300 ports in the United States, and they are all different. Ports may be operated by a state, a county, a municipality, a private corporation, or a combination. Many ports are complex entities, involving facilities for transportation by several modes of transportation: water, rail, road, or even air. Ports are a vitally important part of the nationwide Marine Transportation System, which includes not only ports, but also inland and coastal waterways, and the intermodal connectors. The Maritime Administration provides expertise on port financing and port infrastructure, and has assisted major ports in their recent redevelopment plans. We also are the U.S. government's licensing agency for Deepwater Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Ports.List Of Ports
We also chair the National Port Readiness Network Steering Group, and administer Port Planning Orders for 15 commercial strategic ports so they may fulfill defense requirements.

States seek tests for older drivers

A looming "gray wave" of Baby Boomers expected on the nation's highways over the next two decades has provoked states to start programs aimed at permitting seniors to keep driving as long as they can without endangering themselves or others.
The number of Americans 65 and older will bound from 39 million in 2010 to 69 million in 2030, according to Census projection. Today, about 15% of all drivers in the USA are 65 or older; by 2025, one-quarter will be, says Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.” I really don't think our society is ready for that," he says. "We are not ready with respect to the kinds of issues older drivers face."
What states are doing?
California is analyzing the outcomes of a pilot project in which drivers who failed a preliminary written or vision test were required to take additional tests, sometimes together with an eye exam and a road test.
The state also proposes limited licenses in which elderly drivers are tested — and licensed to drive — only on specific routes that they travel frequently, says Charley Fenner of the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Maryland state law allows police, doctors and residents as well as relatives to refer potentially unfit drivers to the Motor Vehicle Administration's Medical Advisory Board. Police refer about 700 people annually; about 60% of them are drivers over age 65, says Carl Soderstrom, chief of the advisory board. Some drivers are retested
A 2004 Florida law requiring that older drivers pass a vision test before getting a license renewed has assisted to cut the death rate among drivers 80 and older by 17%, according to researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
"It didn't go down for other ages in Florida," says Gerald McGwin, lead author of the study and UAB epidemiology professor.
Experts say people age so differently that it’s not possible to devise a single standard.

Six people died in the accident and at least 12 others sustained injuries, of which the condition of two was said to be critical, police added. Family members of the victims gathered at the factory gate and demanded compensation from the government and the factory owners.

District authorities have announced an immediate compensation of Rs.20,000 to the families of each of those killed.

Top 10 Best Car Names:

Despite what Ford, Lincoln and Mercury have demonstrated in recent years, it's critical for automakers to pick the best car name and stick with them (are you listening, Dearborn?). You can't stick a lame name on a cool car and you can't stick a cool name on a lame car. Here are 10 of the best car names out there.

10 - Dodge Swinger (1969-1976)
Whether or not these were intentionally bought by those pursuing a less vanilla life, we can't say, but the Swinger was one of Dodge's best car names. Not that it was one of the division's best cars, which explains why it's our No. 10. Thing was, nobody at the time paid inordinate attention to the moniker given to two-door Dart models. If anything, it was the Demon that got negative attention from conservative groups.

9 - Porsche Carrera 1956-Present
One of the best car names has never enjoyed continual presence. Since the now-famous script appeared on the fenders of a few special Porsche 356s in 1956, the Carrera (Spanish for "race") name has generally denoted a special, even more potent edition. Even if you didn't know what the name meant, it simply sounded fast. Seen most recently on the over-the-top Carrera GT, it's one of the best car names and also one of the most enduring.

8 - Bugatti Veyron (2006-Present)
The Bugatti name is magical to enthusiasts, so it takes a great model name -- and one breaking from the "EB" designation -- to stand well with the marque. However, one of the best car names is not necessarily as far removed from the automaker as you might think. The car's name comes from Pierre Veyron, Bugatti wheelman and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1939.

7 - Chevrolet Corvette (1953-Present)
Some have shrugged this off as an imaginary name that just sounds cool and nothing more, but it's a real term for a small warship. Not so far out of place, when you think about it. Harley Earl may have designed it and Zora Arkus-Duntov later refined it, but it was GM employee Myron Scott who christened the two-seat fiberglass curiosity. Over half a century later, it's more or less impossible to think Corvette without thinking speed. That's indeed a sign of one of the best car names.
6 - Dodge Viper (1992-Present)
Dodge was an unlikely candidate for a serious performance car in the early '90s, but thanks to an impressive car and a great name, Viper is worthy of its place as one of the best car names. Known as Copperhead in prototype form before adopting its production name, the reptilian references were just a nod to the look of the car's front end. The Viper name quickly signified more though, as an untamed creature on the edge of control.
5 - Lamborghini Countach (1974-1990)
In a break from Lamborghini tradition of bullfighting-inspired model names, Countach is an Italian exclamation for something beautiful, striking and dead sexy. It was that very interjection at the sight of an early example that led to one of the best car names. For those unfamiliar with Italian colloquialisms, it also became one of the most mispronounced car names. Enlightenment sometimes has a trickle-down effect, and it's been years since we've heard anyone call it a "cown-tack." Thankfully.
4 - Shelby American Cobra (1962-1967)
Carroll Shelby said the Cobra name came to him in a dream; kind of ironic for a car that's anything but peaceful. Regardless of the moment of inspiration, the application makes Cobra one of the best car names. We're talking, of course, of the original AC-bodied Cobras. Ford has liberally used the name on various Mustangs since the '60s, but they're a far cry from the curvaceous yet venomous roadsters that spelled trouble for Corvette owners of the era.

3 - Ferrari Testarossa (1984-1996)
It’s just "red head" in Italian, for the color painted on the cam covers. However, tradition and the beauty of the language make this one of the best car names out there. It's also no accident that the mid-engine coupe is named so similarly to the Testa Rossa race cars of the late '50s. What's more, the moniker was more than a painted-on gimmick. This was, after all, a 12-cylinder Ferrari. Say what you will about the design, exotic performance will always be associated with this car name.

2 - Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud (1955-1966)
Automakers have attempted to convey senses of calm and luxury in their cars for decades, but Rolls-Royce is one of the few whose names are as legendary as their models. This car is sterling, and it is soft. Any questions? Not to be confused with the more familiar Silver Shadow that followed, the Silver Cloud hearkens back to a time when Old Money was still Old Money -- just a little less so. It's appropriate for a car that looks like an old bank building on wheels, with approximate size to match.

1 - Ford Mustang (1964-Present)
Said to have been named after the celebrated World War II fighter plane, but publicly marketed with equine overtones, the Mustang name has evoked thoughts of freedom and the open road for generations of drivers. Names like Boss, Cobra and Shelby have signified some even higher-performing 'Stangs along the way; yet even on its own, Mustang is all that's really mattered. The original pony car is still arguably the best, as is its name.

California Leads Nation With Over $1.5 Billion in Federal Obligations for Recovery Funds Designated for Transportation

Following Vice President Biden’s announcement that all 55 U.S. states and territories have obligated 50 percent of their Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funding federally designated for highways by the June 29 federal deadline, a milestone achieved in California more two months ahead of deadline, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that California leads the nation in attaining federal approval and commitment for this funding. To date, over $1.5 billion in Recovery Act funds have been federally approved and committed to 312 transportation projects throughout California - underscoring the state’s focus on pumping Recovery Act funding into the California economy as quickly, efficiently, and responsibly as possible.
“California obligated half of its transportation stimulus funds two months ahead of federal deadline - and we continue that pace today by leading the nation in federal commitments,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “Californians can be assured that we are exceeding federal deadlines and working around the clock to stimulate the California economy through President Obama’s Recovery Act.”
Recovery Act funding is designated for federally defined purposes. California is expected to receive nearly $2.6 billion from the Recovery Act for highways and local streets and $1 billion for transit projects. Competitive programs within the Recovery Act could also provide approximately $300 million in additional funding in this area. Additionally, California expects to be very competitive in securing a portion of $8 billion Recovery Act funding set aside federally for high-speed rail and intercity rail.
