TRANSPORT arrangements for the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg would be different from those of the Confederations Cup.The City of Johannesburg announced during the public transport month observation in Johannesburg on Friday that services, such as Gauride, would not be available.Presenting her commission’s submissions, Yoliswa Mashilwane of the City of Johannesburg, said other services would be integrated into the national transport plan for 2010.
The arrangement would be to look at how many people from a certain area would be travelling to watch a game in Johannesburg. The plan would include those who want to travel to the stadium and those who would want to go to the public viewing places,Mashilwane said. She added that they would also add more rail commuter operations.
Though public transport users called for more Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system buses, they expressed concerns about their safety. They said the concern was not specifically because of the incident in which a BRT bus was shot at after the launch of the system in September, but because of criminal elements that might occur to commuters if police were withdrawn.
They also wanted operations to be extended to Sundays. There are no operations on Sundays and the last operation is on Saturday at 4pm.
